The NCC in India was formed by the National Cadet Corps Act of 1948. It can be traced back to the ‘University Corps’, which was created under the Indian Defense Act 1917, with the objective to make up for the shortage in the Army. In 1920, when the Indian Territorial Act was passed, the ‘University Corps’ was replaced by the ‘University Training Corps’ (UTC). The aim was to raise the status of the UTC and make it more attractive to the youth. The UTC Officers and cadets dressed like the army. It was a significant step towards the Indianization of armed forces.
In 1948, the Girls Division was raised in order to give equal opportunities to school and college going girls. The NCC was given an inter-service image in 1950 when the Air Wing was added, followed by the Naval Wing in 1952. In the same year, the NCC curriculum was extended to include community development/social service activities as a part of the NCC syllabus. National Cadet Corps (NCC) is a youth organization under the Ministry of Defense which ensures multifaceted development of youth with a sense of duty, commitment, dedication, discipline and moral values.
The ‘Aims’ of the NCC laid out in 1988 have stood the test of time and continue to meet the requirements expected of it in the current socio–economic scenario of the country. The NCC aims at developing character, comradeship, discipline, a secular outlook, the spirit of adventure and ideals of selfless service amongst young citizens. Further, it aims at creating a pool of organized, trained and motivated youth with leadership qualities in all walks of life, who will serve the Nation regardless of which career they choose. Needless to say, the NCC also provides an environment conducive to motivating young Indians to join the armed forces.
The need for having a motto for the Corps was discussed in the 11th Central Advisory Committee (CAC) meeting held on 11 Aug 1978. The mottos suggested were ‘Duty and Discipline’; ‘Duty, Unity and Discipline’; ‘Duty and Unity’; ‘Unity and Discipline’. The final decision for selection of “Unity and Discipline” as motto for the NCC was taken in the 12th CAC meeting held on 12 Oct 1980.
The 3/3 COY NCC of Tarakeswar Degree College is functioning under the 3 Bengal Battalion NCC, Serampore, of Kol B, West Bengal and Sikkim Directorate which authorized the total strength is about 150 including SD and SW Cadets from various disciplines and departments. The whole selection and enrollment procedures are carried out through few activities, like measurement of height, 1600 mtr. running in a specific time, pushups, sit ups and merit of higher secondary exam for the selecting a fit and suitable cadet for 3 years. Regular parade sessions are conducted by PI staff on the college ground. ANO and PI Staff took theoretical classes on various subjects in the classroom. Parades are arranged every Wednesday and Saturday in a week. Enrolled Cadets are given institutional training and they also be encouraged to attend several types of Camps conducted at the All- India level, state and unit levels etc. Cadets are actively participate in social service activities like Blood Donation , tree planting, Campus cleaning, pulse polio immunization project, community works, AIDS awareness programmes, cancer awareness programmes, water cleaning Programmes, etc. and also in various types of rally and other social activities organise successfully according to requirement of the various types of programmes with responsibility that is led by senior Rank Holder Cadets.
